FOR THE PURPOSE OF THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW YOU, COULD YOU TELL US YOUR NAME?
My name is comrade Desmond Orisewezie.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CHARACTER?
Should I just say I’m simple and friendly.
WHAT MOTIVATION DO YOU HAVE TOWARDS YOU VYING FOR THE OFFICE OF LAWSAN PRESIDENT?
Ok, right from 100L, my roommate, then, used to be the Lawsan President, I also had as a roommate, the Lawsan Attorney General and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Speaker as a roommate. So they inspired me to keep up with Lawsan activities so that is how I actually became interested in Lawsan and encouraged me to go for an office in 200L. That is when I was the first and currently the last 200L student to be in the office of the Lawsan Secretary General and then when I was working in the office with Kemefa Wesley, the Lawsan President. He also motivated me and told me personally that he sees me becoming the Lawsan President, so I told him I will run for the office when I get to 400L and which I think I am pursuing right now.
WHAT PERSONAL CHARACTERISTIC OF YOURS DO YOU FEEL QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE OFFICE?
Like I said before I’m a single person by nature and I’m also vast in government administration. I’ve been at the hems of affairs of administration for 11 years; from primary school days till now. I have also been the assistant secretary of the Lawsan and the SUG Secretary which I am currently. I feel with this level of experience, I think it’s enough to be the Lawsan President.
MR DESMOND, AS YOU KNOW, THERE WAS AN INTERVIEW CONDUCTED WITH YOUR OPPONENT AND HE MENTIONED HIS ACADEMIC PROWESS MEANT HE HAD MORE TO OFFER THAN YOU. WHAT IS YOUR POSITION ON THAT?
Ok, I’m not really aware of the academic prowess as stated by my opponent. All I know is that I’m on a better standing to go for the office.
YOU HAVE SOMETIMES BEING ACCUSED OF BEING TOO LOYAL. WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSE TO THAT?
You know all these questions make me laugh. Like I said, I am not a proud person and for someone to go for an office in 200L, in 300L and in 400L and is still loved by the masses; what can you say about the person?
AS YOU KNOW, AND ARTICLE WAS POSTED ABOUT YOU BY CAMPUS ECHOES AND REFUTED BY YOUR OPPONENT ON THE GROUNDS THAT IT WAS AN OPINION OF YOURSELF. WHAT DO YOU SAY ABOUT THAT?
Can he really say that? It is evident that what I have actually done as per the students is not measurable with what he is actually stating. I have done a lot for the students in this SUG. We forestalled students’ arrest on campus. In fact, I have been to the police to release students, both Law and Engineering. This SUG conducted one of the best suya nights. This SUG bought a marker board for 300L class. This government renovated the wall clock which as I am talking right now is functional. We ensured that we spoke to the Vice Chancellor and pleaded that the school fees were not increased. And when it was time for payment, we begged that it be extended and now payment was extended to December 31 and registration January 15. What more could you ask from a government?
DO YOU HAVE ANY FEARS THAT YOUR ELECTION WILL BE DÉJÀ VU TO LAST YEAR’S SECRETARY GENERAL ELECTION?
Hmm, (..pauses..) well, to me sovereignty belongs to the people and all power belongs to the people and whoever they choose is the rightful person.
THE POST ABOUT YOU SAID YOU HELPED THE STUDENTS WITH ACCOMODATION AND YOUR OPPONENT MADE CLAIMS TO HAVING A HAND IN IT. DO YOU HAVE COMMENTS?
There is something we call res ipsa loquitor which means the facts speaks for itself. So you can take an opinion poll from the students and ask them if I helped them in the accommodation process. I’m not sure, in fact, I do not see where the claim comes from and I am not aware. And when comrade Ewomazino came, it was for a different issue other than accommodation and I don’t know where he and my SUG president met.
THERE WERE MANY OUTSTANDING PROMISES UNDELIVERED IN THE LAST GOVERNMENT, THE STUDENTS ARE EAGER TO KNOW IF THEY WOULD BE IMPORTANT TO THIS GOVERNMENT?
I can’t tag myself to projects made with previous government because I have to be very careful and consider the small size of the Lawsan pocket, it’s not even enough for the Lawsan dinner. If you check my manifesto, I place more importance on projects that are administrative like the accreditation of the faculty. We are working with the school authorities when I was Secretary General under Wesley, we pushed on for the accreditation of the Faculty of Law with the help of top governmental officers. Even as SUG executives we fought for the accreditation of the Faculty of Law. What I am going to do is work with the Delta state government to make sure Oleh does not close down. So these things do not attract money and I will like to say this to myself and my opponent not to make unrealistic promises.
WHY WAS THE PAST SUG OF WHICH YOU WERE A PART OF DISSOLVED?
Ok, the dissolution of the SUG by the XY Provost was unconstitutional and I told him that under various sections, he has no rights and I can tell you as the SUG Secretary General and he has no right. The Constitution provides that an SUG can only be dissolved when a new executive has been sworn in. Such process has not been reached. I asked the school that a legal department be considered before an action. Unilateral decisions should not hold. Decisions should be in line with constitutional provisions. We presented to the new provost that we will not entertain it again. It sounds funny when they said they dissolved the SUG, the Provost’s PRO and the officers at the Student department still calls me to carry out some duties. I will like to assure the students that there was no financial misappropriation or recklessness on the part of students.
AS MOST STUDENTS KNOW YOU WERE FORMALLY IN THE SUG, WE BELIEVE YOU MUST HAVE NOTICED A FAULT IN THE PAST LAWSAN GOVERNMENT WHICH INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO COME BACK TO THE GOVERNMENT. WHAT FAULT DID YOU NOTICED?
When I campaigned in 300L, I told them that the former government had tried and I am not here to criticize anybody. In my banner, you will see something “Improvement”. It is not a time for criticism and I assure Oleh campus.
YOU SEEM TO GET ALONG WELL WITH THE POPULACE ON CAMPUS,TELL US WHAT’S THE MAGIC?
I relate with every clique. Being the Lawsan Secretary should not make proud and see my fellow students and say I will not shake hands with them. When you are down to earth, humble and generous, people love you and as the Lawsan president, nothing will change.
ANY FINAL WORD
I have a heartfelt message for my supporters, I want to tell them, I love them all and they have been supportive all the years. I appreciate them as they stand by me and that is why I will not fail them and support them as they support me.
